A Terrible Mix (So Far!)
Fear - the never-ending conflict of Bilbo Baggins in this epic and wonderful story. This is fear of creatures, surroundings, and adventure. Bilbo and his fear started at the beginning of this tale (pg 31) where the narrator states “The Tookishness was wearing off, and he was not now quiet so sure that he was going on any adventure in the morning.” Now, in Mirkwood he and his other dwarf friends are now terrified out of their wits here in this spooky and dark forest where there are mysterious eyes gleaming out at them during sundown and dense cobwebs everywhere (pg 154-155). For Bilbo, whenever he has time to ponder, he thinks about being all cozy in his hobbit hole with nothing to worry about although I do think he will have numerous things to worry about for the rest of his life concluding this adventure. Therefore, Bilbo Baggins and fear are definitely a terrible mix. There were so many conflicts to choose from, and I am so glad you recognized this one as being very important. Do you know into which category of conflict this falls? It is certainly a recurring conflict. Why do you think Tolkien does this? The text you chose to cite was PERFECT for your response! As for your title... hummmm, rather than fear and Bilbo being a terrible mix, consider whether or not fear controls Bilbo. Nice job, Reagan!
